Innate immunity against bacterial pathogens

The innate immune system is the first line in defense against microbial pathogens. We study how host defense proteins recognize and attack bacterial pathogens.

Bacterial evasion of host defenses

Pathogens and hosts are in a constant tug of war. We study how bacterial pathogens evade innate immune defenses.

Inflammation during bacterial infections

Inflammation is a potent immune defense, but can lead to severe tissue damage and sepsis. We study the mechanisms underlying bacteria-induced inflammation.

Antimicrobial strategies

Antimicrobial resistance of bacterial pathogens is rapidly increasing. We use our understanding of host-pathogen interactions to develop new strategies for combatting multi-drug-resistant bacteria.
